Inter Miami wants to arrange Messi’s farewell game against Barca.

FC Barcelona said a rather abrupt goodbye to Lionel Messi in 2021. Inter Miami is trying to make that right.
According to Inter Miami managing owner Jorge Mas, he is working to arrange a memorial game against Barcelona so that Messi and supporters can say goodbye in style, as he told Marca.
“I gave [Messi] my commitment that I will do everything possible in the coming years so that he has the opportunity to say goodbye to his fans in Barcelona,” Mas told the newspaper in Spain.

“We’ll play a match of some sort, or Inter Miami will travel to Barcelona. Messi did not enjoy leaving Barcelona; he was unable to say goodbye to the team that had raised him, and Lionel may not have wanted the situation that resulted.”

Messi, who initially signed with Barcelona as a youth player in 2003, played for the Spanish powerhouse for a total of 18 years, during which he set a club record with 672 goals in the senior squad. In addition, he has participated in the most games in Barcelona’s history, winning 34 championships with the team while he was there. During his tenure at Barcelona, he also took home seven Ballon d’Or trophies.
When the two parties could not come to an agreement on a new contract, the Argentine star’s time with Barcelona came to an end in August 2021, opening the door for him to sign with Paris Saint-Germain. Messi was considering going back to Barcelona after his relationship with the French team soured, but in June he signed a record-breaking deal with Inter Miami.
Even though Messi decided to sign a contract elsewhere this summer, Barcelona has nonetheless shown interest in holding a final game against Inter Miami. The reopening of Spotify Camp Nou after renovations would be a “excellent” date for Messi’s return match, according to Barcelona president Joan Laporta, who made this announcement shortly after Messi decided to join Inter Miami. The anticipated completion date of the renovations is the beginning of the 2025–2026 season.
Meanwhile, Messi has completely taken over American soccer and the MLS. In the 12 games he has played for Inter Miami, which has won the Leagues Cup in August and has never lost, he has scored 11 goals.
Mas is aware of Messi’s influence on the league as a whole, not just on his team.
Mas said, “I think everything has changed with him,” to Marca. “Another is the MLS. The stadiums are packed each time we play away from home.
“Lionel’s reception has been outstanding. There were pink Inter Miami and Albiceleste t-shirts worn by the majority of the nearly 30,000 spectators in New York who were yelling Messi’s name during the game. That surprised me; I hadn’t anticipated that. Before and after Messi joins the MLS, there will be.”
However, there has recently been a brief respite from the craziness surrounding Messi. Due to a leg injury, the World Cup winner has missed Inter Miami’s last three games, which has cost them valuable time as they attempt to contend for the MLS playoffs.
Messi started practicing again on Tuesday. Speaking to reporters prior to the practice, Inter Miami coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino declined to provide any kind of timeline regarding Messi.
The team plays on Wednesday night in Chicago. Messi hasn’t played much in the last month and has spent the majority of it on the day-to-day injury list.
Due to what his club and country initially referred to as fatigue, the 36-year-old Messi has missed four of Inter Miami’s last five games in addition to one for Argentina during that time. During that period, the only game he did not miss was a 37-minute appearance on September 20 against Toronto, which he had to leave the game early due to a hamstring problem.
Messi appeared at the team’s stadium on Monday night to help celebrate the opening of a kids’ menu featuring his name at select Hard Rock locations across the globe. Most media present at the event were not given access to him for comment, and he did not provide an update on his injury.
Inter Miami is four spots and four points out of the final playoff spot from that side of MLS going into the thirteenth week of the Eastern Conference. While a loss on Wednesday would not guarantee Inter Miami a spot in the playoffs, it would severely harm the team’s chances of making it.
