Prime Minister of Tamil Nadu Narendra Modi has sent his sincere condolences to the family and supporters of actor and DMDK founder Vijayakanth, who succumbed to pneumonia at Miot Hospital. In the Tamil film industry, Vijayakanth was a legend, renowned for his captivating roles and strong dedication to public service. He had a positive Covid-19 test as well. Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Congress, also expressed his profound sorrow at Vijayakanth’s passing, saying that millions of people will always remember his contributions to politics and film. Vijayakanth’s family, friends, supporters, and admirers have also received the sincerest condolences from Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge.
Following the delivery of Vijayakanth’s mortal remains, Chief Minister MK Stalin paid a visit to his home. His body would then be transported to the DMDK headquarters. Following a protracted illness, Vijayakanth was admitted to the hospital in November. On December 14, his wife Premalatha Vijayakanth officially assumed leadership of the party.

DMDK ran for every assembly seat in 2006, but its results were dismal.
Along with the AIADMK, the DMDK ran for office in 2011 and won 26 of the 41 seats it sought.
In 2011, the DMDK became the main opposition party after gaining more seats than the DMK.
From 2011 to 2016, Vijayakanth led the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.
Later, the DMDK severed its ties with the AIADMK due to disagreements, which led to the resignation of a large number of DMDK MLAs.
